The many faces of Greece.  Metropolises and mountains, beaches and gulfs. Each time we visit, we discover something new and spectacular.  In recent years, the serene Peloponnese, Greece’s beautiful, best-kept secret has recently found its place on the map of the Israeli tourist. One of its key attributes is the wide range of sites and attractions suitable for almost any traveler.  Depending on who you are, a vacation in the Peloponnese means relaxing nature walks through mountains and canyons, an intriguing tour of the dazzling stalactite cave and historic sites, or hiking, jeeping, rappelling and mountain biking at extreme altitudes.

History buffs will revel in some of the most famous archeological sites in the world. Greece’s Peloponnese is home to Olympia, Epidaurus and Mycenae, and of course, ancient Sparta. In Olympia lie two of the world’s famous museums, the Archaeological Museum of Olympia which bears the famous sculpture of Greek deity Hermes, and the one-of-a-kind interactive Museum of Olympic Games which was founded by the Olympics Committee and features fascinating exhibits about the Olympics, from ancient to contemporary times.

Nature lovers can pick from a virtually endless array of hikes and nature trails. East of Nafplio, in the Arcadia mountains, lies the Lousios Canyon, breathtaking in beauty but lesser frequented by travelers. The deep canyon is enveloped in dramatic scenery, and its gushing river which flows past many an antique ruin is a popular rafting site.

No visit to Kalavrita is complete without a ride on the iconic Vouraikos Canyon Cog Railway which climbs to an altitude of 750 meters above sea level using wheels with special pinions.   The heart-stopping journey begins in Kalavrita and lasts about one hour to beachfront Diakopto, crossing through the Vouraikos Canyon on the way. The train covers a 22-kilometer distance, crossing steep bridges and narrow stone tunnels and passing soaring mountains, formidable stone cliffs and magnificent waterfalls that will keep you glued to the window from beginning to end!

Corinth Canal

  • Cruise
  • Beach
  • Scenic lookout
  • Historic site

Located an hour’s drive from Athens toward the Peloponnese, the Corinth Canal is a must-see for every traveler to Greece!   Cruise down the historic Canal, which has long been used as a passageway between the Corinth and Saronic Gulfs in the Aegean Sea, cutting through the narrow Isthmus of Corinth and separating the Peloponnese from the Greek mainland.

The Canal was dug between 1881 and 1893, shortening the distance between the Adriatic Sea and Pireas by nearly 320 kilometers.  The Canal stretches 6.4 kilometers and is 8 meters deep, yet is only 21 meters wide at its base, making it impassable for many modern ships. The walls flanking the manmade Canal soar 84 meters above sea level and are connected by two drawbridges, one featuring train tracks and the other serving as a main highway connecting central Greece and Athens to the Peloponnese.

A third bridge was recently constructed as part of the new highway connecting Athens to the Peloponnese.

Presently, the majority of traffic in the Canal is comprised of tourist, transport and fuel ships, with approximately 8000 boats, rafts and barges passing annually through the Canal.

Acropolis of Athens

  • Historic sites
  • Lookout
  • Urban tour
  • Shopping

The Acropolis is undoubtedly the #1 tourist attraction in Athens, drawing millions of international tourists annually. An ancient citadel located on a rocky outcrop above the city of Athens, it boasts the remains of ancient buildings of great architectural and historical significance.  The Acropolis was declared a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1987.

The Acropolis, which literally translates as ‘pinnacle city’ is located on a plateau soaring 150 meters above sea level in the heart of the historic city of Athens.  At the summit, we find remnants of temples from ancient times, including the famous Parthenon with its iconic pillars that was constructed in approximately 500 BCE during the era of the Second Temple in Jerusalem. With its decorative sculptures, the Parthenon is regarded as an enduring symbol of Ancient GreeceDemocracy and Western civilization, and is one of the world’s greatest cultural monuments.

During those times, Greek architects, among them Ictinos and Callicrates who designed and constructed the Parthenon, were master artisans, albeit like many artists throughout history, their contributions were only appreciated postmortem. Ancient classic and Hellenistic Greek art and architecture influences construction and design until this very day, with many modern buildings featuring classic Greek elements, among them the Brandenburg Gate in Germany, Capitol in Washington, and Royal Opera House in London.

Cave of the Lakes

  • Historic Sites
  • Cruise
  • Fishing
  • Lake

17 kilometers from Kalavrita, in the village of Kastria, is the world-famous Cave of the Lakes, a rare natural phenomenon that encompasses a network of underground labyrinths and mysterious stone galleries embellished with splendid stalactite formations. Thirteen terraced underground lakes are divided into three levels, making it the only cave complex of its kind in the world. Another unique aspect of the Cave of the Lakes is its 2 kilometer-long subterranean river. After the winter, when the snow melts, the entire cave transforms into a majestic flowing river with natural breathtaking waterfalls. Later into the summer, the Cave begins to dry, exposing impressive stone basins and 4 kilometer high dams, while the remainder of the Cave preserves its water throughout the year in its 13 picturesque lakes. Visitors pass along a safe corridor through a stone forest filled with surprises. At the end of this corridor the visitor faces the ‘Castle,’ one of the Cave’s most impressive formations recalling a castle’s battlements. Here, the heavy rainfall created a large terraced lake with waterfalls that follow the rhythm and melody produced by the constant flow of drops.

The water, which flows past the limestone walls in the early rainy season, formed three levels. The first level, which visitors enter immediately, is dry and passable. The second is comprised of the 13 lakes, each with a different size and depth, and filled with striking engravings from the constant flow of water. The third level is likewise dry and flat, and its walls are adorned with marvelous stalactites and stalagmites in a range of colorful hues. Some of these formations resemble chandeliers or valances that hang from a 30-meter tall ceiling.

The lake waters are crystal clear, awing visitors with their breathtaking reflections of the spectacular surroundings. At present, some 500 meters of the Caves are developed and adapted to guarantee safe entry to visitors. These areas feature aesthetic lighting and a network of small bridges that complement the magical surroundings and lend it its ethereal beauty.

Vouraikos Canyon

  • Verdant scenery
  • Mountains
  • Hiking
  • River

The train ride from Diakopto on the coast of the Corinthian bay to Kalavrita is an unforgettable journey through the evergreen Vouraikos Canyon. The most celebrated train ride in the Balkan region, this diminutive locomotive travels 14 miles on a narrow wooden track only 75 cm wide and is the smallest in all of Europe.

Since Kalavrita is situated at an altitude of 750 meters above sea level, regular trains are unable to climb the sharp incline or operate on its steep grades. The train thus boasts special pinions inside the wheels that mesh into a heavy chain lying between the two sides of the track to facilitate the climb. The Kalavrita train is famous among train lovers for its unique size and capacity, and the ride is incontestably one of the most beautiful in the world.  The little train blends so naturally into the natural environment that many are inclined to believe that it was there since Creation! Its construction had no negative impact on the local ecology, as the engineers and builders made use only of stone and wood to lend it its natural appearance.

The heart-stopping journey begins in Kalavrita and lasts about one hour to Diakopto, crossing through the Vouraikos Canyon. The train covers the 22 kilometer journey at a speed of 30-40km/h when moving along the regular rack and 6-15km/h when moving along the toothed racks. As the train gains altitude and crosses the first steep bridge, the scenery changes and the tracks continue parallel to the river. In You’ll pass by formidable stone cliffs and the famous palace positioned at its summit and continue through narrow stone tunnels, bridges and open areas. A kilometer below, you’ll hear the gush of the Vouraikos River and gaze upon magnificent waterfalls that spill fresh water as diamonds, lending credence to the name Kalavrita, a compound of the Greek words Kala Vryta (Good Waters).
